Sexual Dysfunction
Sexual dysfunction can arise from a variety of psychological and physical factors and encompasses the loss of sexual desire, pain during intercourse and the inability to obtain an erection (erectile dysfunction) or to enjoy or achieve orgasm. About 30 to 50% of women experience sexual dysfunction at some time during their life, while 20-30% of men will experience problems such as erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.
Sexual dysfunction has a significant impact on quality of life and as such, deserves attention from healthcare providers and investors in healthcare. A better understanding of the physical factors which contribute to male and female sexual dysfunction has lead to the development of specific pharmaceutical remedies such as oral drugs for erectile dysfunction and testosterone supplements, but substantial unmet medical needs remain.
